Full-time MBA, 2005
Country of origin: China
Employer: Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Xin Sun (Katie) came from China to undertake the Lancaster Full-time MBA after three years working in Shenyang Municipal Government. Since graduating she has been working for the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the UK as a project manager. Here she writes about her choices and decision-making, and her life at Lancaster during the MBA.

I graduated with a degree in Business English in China, after which I worked in Shenyang Municipal Government as the Chief Translator for the Mayor and Business Co-ordinator for three years. I’ve always wanted to enrich myself to a higher level academically, and fortunately I obtained a coveted Chevening Scholarship from the British Council in 2004, which helped to achieve my dream of taking a Master’s degree in the UK.

The reasons I chose LUMS were its good ranking, the quick response from the recruitment team, the professionalism of the faculty, and its splendid natural location

The experience I had at LUMS was unforgettably fantastic. The MBA basically transformed me, as a young ambitious individual, into a person who is much closer to my personal goal of becoming a true professional and someone with more experience of the world, especially the real business world.

Most of the lecturers are well-known professors in their fields and the lectures are interesting and of high quality. The LUMS faculty are absolutely fantastic, they are always there to help and support.

The knowledge in management and business that I gained is certainly helping me in the real business world to solve the problems, but more importantly it helped me to open the door to a higher level of business career. The team work with students from different backgrounds and cultures, the seminars and conferences, all kinds of social activities and parties – these have all become my beautiful memories of LUMS.

Lancaster itself is a lovely place to live; the quietness and green space are typical of the English countryside and so different from the big city in China where I come from. I still miss Lancaster now, even though I moved only to Yorkshire, which is the next county. I still tell my friends here that Lancaster is my favourite place in the UK, and coming to LUMS is the best choice I’ve ever made.
