PhD in Accounting and Finance, 2007
Employer: Catholic University, Portugal
I regard choosing Lancaster to do my PhD as one of the best decisions I have ever made. When facing the decision of where to go for my PhD studies, the UK was the most obvious choice in Europe. The rest was easy: in my field – Accounting – Lancaster has no parallel in the UK and provides a top quality research environment.
The Department of Accounting and Finance provided me with the best guidance and resources I could imagine. The high quality and friendly environment really made a difference, and everyone was always available to help and to discuss my ideas. I am very indebted to my supervisors and all of those who took the time to help me.
Lancaster University has a large international community: this makes everyone feel more comfortable and makes it easier to make new friends and to keep your research and social life balanced.
Finally, Lancaster is a fantastic city for those who, like me, think the countryside and beautiful landscapes are important. Lancaster is a historic city surrounded by a true feeling of nature – one hour away from the amazing Lake District or from the always busy and metropolitan Manchester.
After completing my PhD I decided to stay in academia and improve my research skills. I initially took up a research position at Lancaster and, again, their excellence in research allowed me to learn and apply new techniques and develop new research tools. After this period, and together with my family, I decided to come back to my home country. Since then, the Lancaster experience has repeatedly proven to be an extremely valuable line on my CV, allowing me to secure a job in one of the most prestigious business schools in the country, with strong international connections and where the skills I gathered during my PhD are highly valued.
