Ann Cunliffe (USA)

PhD in Management Learning, 1997

Whilst working at Blackburn College, I registered for an MPhil with the Department of Management Learning. I completed the degree in 1985 and during that period developed a strong belief in the value of student-centred learning and continued development that is an integral part of the department's philosophy.

I moved to the USA and for the last 11 years have been teaching in the business school at the University of New Hampshire. After making a decision to continue my own personal development, I looked for a PhD programme which would combine the independence and self-discipline of a research degree with the support of faculty who would nurture my interests. This led me back to Lancaster, where I felt the opportunity existed to interact with a wide network of faculty.

My PhD supervisors kept me focused on the essentials of the research process while challenging and stretching my thinking beyond anything I anticipated. DML faculty continually shared ideas on pedagogy and encouraged me to explore the synergistic relationship between research, learning and teaching practice.
