Phillippa Williamson
Executive MBA, 2007
Chief Executive Officer, Serious Fraud Office
At the time of enrolling on the Lancaster EMBA I was a Director in Her Majesty’s Revenues and Customs. I was searching in general and wanted to develop my understanding and skills in the world of management and business.
I decided on the Lancaster EMBA for a number of reasons. I was impressed by the Management School’s reputation and the modular programme. I also liked being able to put ideas into practice as I worked and the programme’s focus on developing critical thinking.
The things that stand out most for me are:
- the modular format of the EMBA course. Dedicated time away to study, learning in a safe but concentrated environment, worked really well for me and my employer. I am sure that would not have been the case with a day-release format
- stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging my brain in academic way for the first time in a long while!
- working with my tutorial group – my colleagues actually made the exam and Consultancy Challenge enjoyable
- meeting a broad spectrum of people from a variety of backgrounds, organisations and experience
Of course, there is no getting away from it – the EMBA is hard work. Ordinary life does not stand still, and sometimes it was a challenge to balance study, work and family life. But the whole experience has extended my perspective and approach to work. I have developed more confidence, a bit more reflection (still working on this!) and my time management and ability to focus.
It has also benefited me professionally. I have been promoted twice since completing the EMBA, on the second occasion moving to a new organisation – the Serious Fraud Office – as the Chief Operating Officer.
Phillippa is now Chief Executive Officer of the Serious Fraud Office.
