Research in Accounting and Finance

The Department has an international research reputation. Individual staff research activities cover a wide variety of areas, organised in two major fields:
- Accounting, where the principal research strengths are in Financial Reporting, Accounting-Based Valuation, and Governance and Management Control;
- Finance, where the main specialisms are in Corporate Finance, Financial Markets, Financial Econometrics, and Derivative Pricing.

The Department invests heavily in research-related infrastructure with the aim of creating an environment in which ideas flourish and staff members are able to reach their full research potential. Examples of research support available to staff include:
- One of the strongest financial database structures in the UK academic sector. Examples of data resources available to academic staff include WRDS, Compustat, CRSP, Datastream, Thomson One Banker, Thomson Research, Worldscope, Extel, InvesText, I/B/E/S, ExtelConnect (formerly JCF Quant/Factset), Perfect Information, Manifest, and NYSE Trade and Quotes (TAQ).
- A visiting speaker/seminar series that is amongst the strongest in the UK, with a large fraction of presenters from leading North American Universities. Details of past and forthcoming seminars are available here.
- Generous personal research budgets that enable staff members to present their research at top international conferences, hire research assistants, etc.
Research activity is also supported by a range of external funding bodies including the European Commission, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), The Leverhulme Trust, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), INQUIRE, and the Nuffield Foundation. The International Centre for Research in Accounting (ICRA), an independently financed unit within the Department, also provides financial support for research relevant to the practice of accounting.
A vibrant PhD programme represents an integral part of the Department's research environment. The Department currently has in excess of 20 full-time PhD students. More than 30 students have graduated from the programme since 2001, most of whom hold academic posts in leading UK and overseas universities including Cass Business School, Durham, Exeter, Essex, Manchester Business School, National Taiwan University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Other recent graduates have taken up finance-sector positions with prestigious City firms such as BGI, Old Mutual Asset Management, HSBC, Credit Agricole Asset Management, and Towers Perrin.
