Programme content

The BSc (Hons) Accounting, Auditing and Finance (Ernst & Young degree) is a four-year sandwich programme based at Lancaster, with salaried placements with Ernst & Young and professional training with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS).

The structure of the programme is as follows:

Part I (first year)

Like all other degrees offered by the Department of Accounting and Finance, you will be require to study three subjects in your first year. The difference with this degree is that you will have no choice over which subjects you study. The three modules that you must take are:

  • Introduction to Accounting and Finance
  • Principles of Economics
  • Statistics and Computing for Management

Part II (second, third and fourth years)

The second year comprises a mixture of more advanced modules at Lancaster plus a 3-month paid placement (January to March) with Ernst & Young. As in the first year, you will have no choice over which modules you study. You will be required to take the following modules:

  • Principles of Financial Accounting
  • Introduction to Management Accounting
  • Accounting Information Systems and Auditing
  • Principles of Finance
  • Business Law (which is taken in September before the start of the academic year)
  • Introduction to Statistical Methods for Business

The third year involves a full one-year placement with Ernst & Young. During this period, you will also complete a written dissertation and sit the following two ICAS Professional Examinations:

  • Assurance and Business Systems
  • Advanced Finance

The fourth year consists of a mixture of advanced modules at Lancaster plus another 3-month paid placement (January to March) with Ernst & Young. Unlike the first and second years, however, you will have some choice over which mdoules you study. The fourth year modules are as follows:

  • Financial Accounting I
  • Financial Accounting II
  • Issues in Auditing
  • Accounting for Management Control
