PhD funding and scholarships

A range of funding opportunities is available to finance the PhD Study of high calibre students. These take the form of scholarships, studentships, bursaries and include:

  • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) awards
  • Departmental studentships
  • Management School awards

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) awards

Deadline: End of February 2012

Lancaster University is part of the ESRC’s North West Doctoral Training Centre (NWDTC). A large number of studentships, covering tuition and maintenance, are available at Lancaster, Liverpool or Manchester with some studentships reserved for students seeking joint supervision across two or more partner institutions. Details of the provision and funding offered by the NWDTC are also available on the NWDTC website.

ESRC studentships are currently £16,590 pa

The Economics Department has open studentships. We encourage applicants to consult the research interests of academic staff members in particular. Prospective candidates are then encouraged to contact the relevant staff to help develop a research proposal.

Eligibility: Open to all students including international students (full award).

Overseas students: The ESRC has relaxed the rules around international eligibility in strategic areas, allowing fees and stipends to be paid to students outside the UK. As a pilot NWDTC will be able to recruit students for awards in Economics and Advanced Quantitative Methods without adhering to the current residential eligibility rules as laid out in the ESRC PG training guidelines.

Economics Department studentships

The Department of Economics normally awards two types of studentship:

  • General research studentships, open to candidates of any nationality and awarded on the basis of academic ability. If you wish to be considered for these studentships, your completed application form should reach us before 30 June.
       
  • EU research studentships, open to suitably qualified citizens of the European Union. These are awarded for two years in the first instance and include the payment of tuition fees. Successful applicants will have a good Master's degree in Economics and may be expected to contribute towards undergraduate teaching. To apply for these studentships your application should reach us no later than the December before your proposed year of entry.

Management School awards

Each year a number of studentships and bursaries are offered by LUMS. For details of latest awards, see the main PhD funding pages for the School.

Funding for overseas students

The British Council and various government and international agencies operate schemes which provide financial support for study in the UK. For information, please contact the nearest British Embassy, consulate or British Council Office. For more information, the funding section of the British Council website is a useful starting point.

Financial assistance

The Department may, under certain circumstances, offer teaching assistantships.
