Year in industry
Economics and Business Economics majors have the option of spending a year in approved employment between their second and third years of study as part of their degree. The School has strong links with many employers and each year helps over 200 LUMS students to find suitable placements. Typically these are with large companies, like British Airways, Kelloggs, Reebok and Fujitsu.
These four-year degrees are nine-unit schemes rather than the standard eight-unit model, as on your return to Lancaster you complete a dissertation module, ECON 350. This focuses on an aspect of your placement which links to theories and concepts you have encountered in your study of Economics. This dissertation therefore aims to be a synthesis of theory and practice.
As many of our students have found, placement in industry is tremendously beneficial. It allows you to see the relevance of what you have studied in a practical context and also enriches your final year studies. Such experience greatly enhances your employment prospects – you will not find it hard to secure graduate job interviews. It also helps you to decide the type of career to pursue and the type of organisation in which you wish to work.

Those with whom we have recently placed students include Accenture, Amadeus, Barclaycard, Boots, British Airways, BAe Systems, BMW, Central Government, Fujitsu, GE, HSBC, IBM, KPMG, Marks and Spencer, Nestlé, the NHS, the Post Office, Reebok, Reuters, Warburtons, Warner Bros, and many others – including smaller and more local companies. They cover all business sectors in all parts of the UK as well as a small number of foreign opportunities.
