The presentation will draw on many SSM projects and will include several short sessions illustrating different aspects of the approach. The aim will be to enable the participants to begin to make use of the ideas presented.

Who should attend?

Experienced analysts and advisors who wish to develop their process and thinking skills, which are needed when working with strategic issues.

What delegates will learn from the course

In recent years, a range of so-called ‘soft’ or problem structuring approaches have been added to the armoury of OR. These include soft systems methodology (SSM), cognitive mapping (now part of Journey Making) and the strategic choice approach. In conventional OR these provide useful ways of problems structuring, but are also useful ways of helping groups to think through difficult and complex issues. Delegates will gain an understanding of the main features of these approaches and, afterwards, should be in a position to make use of them in their own work.

Training methods used

Class discussion, workshops, case exercises, software demonstrations.

What the course covers
