PhD study and research degrees
The Department welcomes able research students, suitably qualified and interested in pursuing research in the Department's areas of academic specialisation towards a MPhil/PhD. A range of social science disciplines is included in the Department and research supervision is possible in a wide number of areas.
Examples of work undertaken by past students include studies of job satisfaction and stress in psychiatric nurses; the subjective experience of time in time-bounded institutions (prisons); metaphor in organisation theory; organisation development for third world countries; ethogenic approaches to absence; alienation and authenticity and their consequences for organised work; and work, motive and meaning in the behavioural sciences. Current doctoral work includes studies of information technology and management; cognitive aspects of management and organisation; organisational dissent; communication theory and organisation; public sector restructuring (NHS); managing transformational change; postmodernist theories of organisations.
Work for research degrees is taxing for even the most talented. To facilitate a supportive and stimulating environment for our research students, each is always allocated two supervisors. Students are encouraged to participate in the regular research and special graduate seminars held in the department and School by staff and visiting speakers. Full-time research students are also normally expected to attend relevant parts of the MA lecture programme.
Entry requirements
UK applicants are expected to hold at least an upper second class honours degree in a social science subject. Overseas applicants should hold equivalent qualifications.
