Sustainable Industrial Development in China, '09

Dates: 16-17 April 2009

Venue: Fudan University School of Management, Shanghai

China has emerged as a manufacturing and trading powerhouse in the world over the last three decades, but can China’s industries continue to develop in a sustainable way in the face of international competition, environmental challenges, and natural resource constraints? Speculation is rife already on the far-reaching implications of the question both for China’s own economic and social development and for the global economic and business landscape. With the increasing importance of China as the world’s largest developing economy, the sustainability of Chinese industrial development has become a more and more demanding issue for both policy makers and scholars.

These factors create a demand for research on sustainable industrial development in China. The Conference is jointly organised by Fudan University Management School’s Department of Industrial Economics, Lancaster China Management Centre (LCMC) and Brunel University’s Centre for Economic Development and Institutions.

Papers have been submitted across research disciplines including industrial, development and institutional economics, management science, environmental economics and related disciplines, and themes covered will include:

• Institutional reform in facilitating both industrial restructuring and policy development for more sustainable development.
• Competitiveness build-up, through means such as research and innovation, and improvement in productivity, cost/energy efficiency, and product quality.
• The impacts of globalization in general and multinational enterprises in particular upon the competitiveness of Chinese industrial sectors and firms, and the impacts of China’s industrial catch-up on the global production and business systems.
• Industrial development policy and technological developments to both alleviate environmental damages and create the prospect of renewable energy for the future growth of industry.
• Environmental impacts and natural resource constraints on sustainable development, and their challenges for reshaping industry in future.

Professors David Brown and Alasdair MacBean of the Lancaster China Management Centre will both be key speakers at the event.
