Love it or hate it, outsourcing is at the top of the contemporary business agenda. To some it is a quick fix to flagging and ailing workforces in need of an injection of new entrepreneurial spirit. For others, it’s simply the relocation back to where they belong of administrative or 'back office' business processes through the sophisticated application of software applications. Where some see development, engagement and performance enhancement, others see exploitation, arbitration and offshoring. What evidence can recent research shed on our understanding of the transformational capacities of business process outsourcing?

Dr Liu has recently completed a research project for the Development Centre of the State Councils of China and the World Bank. The project was involved in a large-scale survey of more than 1,000 companies about their privatization plans and strategies. He will draw on this interesting data for his talk.
