Pre MSc course in China

Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE)

Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE)

Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) is situated on two campuses in a relaxed city of Chengdu. The University has a very long history of teaching finance and economics and has been recently expanding into other areas such as banking. In 2007 Dr James Huang visited SWUFE and established very good contact with their Research Institute of Economics and Management. The Institute is a research driver of the University with its staff of about twenty academics who returned to China after their overseas experience. Many of the academics completed their PhD studies in the UK or USA and their key effort is to enhance international research in SWUFE.

Lancaster University Management School developed a Pre Masters preparatory programme for SWUFE graduates who wish to continue with their graduate education in Lancaster. The Pre MSc programme runs in the last year of the undergraduate studies at SWUFE at weekends. The programme covers areas of economics, accounting and finance and is taught in English. The main objective of the programme not only enhances the students’ subject knowledge but prepare them for an academic environment in a UK University. The assignments have been modelled on the British methodology, which serves as a bridge to success at very intensive Masters programmes at Lancaster.

Dr Radka Newton, LUMS International Programmes Director, has visited SWUFE twice and hosted SWUFE academics in Lancaster in spring 2008 when the partnership was finalised. "We have great confidence that the preparatory course we developed will be of high academic quality and also very beneficial to those SWUFE graduates who wish to succeed at a British Masters programme."

SWUFE graduates who successfully complete the Pre MSc programme and achieve an overall band of 7 in the International English Language Testing Service Examination (IELTS) with a balanced profile across the skills and no score falling below 6.0, or the equivalent on TOEFL (iBT 100) will be considered for further studies on the MSc Money, Banking and Finance.
