Aims, objectives and outcomes
The overall aim of the programme is to give graduates from a wide range of backgrounds in the arts and social sciences a sound grounding in the skills they need to embark on a career in management and business, especially as they apply to questions of human resources and the increasingly important field of knowledge management. The Lancaster MA in Human Resource and Knowledge Management blends a number of areas of academic knowledge in organisational analysis, human resource and knowledge management and it encourages the development of holistic diagnoses of organisational problems.
Objectives
The detailed objectives of the programme are:
- To develop an understanding of concepts and theories in the areas of human resource management and knowledge management
- To help students prepare effectively, through broadening their understanding, for a management career as a specialist in the above fields
- To develop a sound knowledge of basic concepts in organisation studies and to adopt a critical orientation towards this
- To bring out an appreciation of the need for innovative thinking in all areas but especially in understanding organisational theory and its application to contemporary technical and organisational change
- To develop and demonstrate analytical thinking and diagnostic ability applied to particular cases of technical and organisational change
- To develop the ability to write cogently and persuasively about organisational issues
- To provide a sound basis for further professional development in the future or educational development at higher levels of learning
Intended outcomes
Graduates of the MA Human Resource and Knowledge Management Programme will, typically, be able to:
- use highly developed critical thinking skills to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences
- demonstrate self-direction, insight and originality in researching, thinking in and around, tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level
- continue to advance their knowledge and understanding and to develop new skills to a high level
and will have: - The qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring:
o the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility
o decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations
o the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development
