AgitaviSoftware entrepreneurship: preparing students for the future of software

The MSc in E-Business and Innovation programme has partnered with Agitavi, a global business and technology consulting firm, to incorporate software entrepreneurship and software business topics into the curriculum.

The new module EBIN527 ‘Software Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ provides students with practical knowledge of software markets, software business models, software distribution, and software business management aspects. It interrelates these business topics with a deep understanding of the technology and software engineering trends shaping the next generation of web and mobile applications.

Jyoti Banerjee on software entrepreneurship

Jyoti Banerjee is a consultant in business software markets and director of Agitavi Research. Jyoti engages with software business, universities and government agencies to drive software entrepreneurship and promote better software business management practices. In this video he describes Agitavi's collaboration with Lancaster University.

Agitavi is the ideal partner for fostering software entrepreneurship education. Since 2006, Agitavi has been working with Microsoft to develop a Software Entrepreneurship for Students Curriculum with the goal of bridging the gap between technology education and entrepreneurial skill-set development. The E-Business and Innovation programme is one of the first academic programmes to incorporate these materials into a university curriculum.

The Microsoft/Agitavi Software Entrepreneurship Curriculum

The Software Entrepreneurship for Students Curriculum was developed by Microsoft and Agitavi to provide students with knowledge and tools to develop successful and sustainable software ventures.

Lars Lindstedt, Software Economist with Microsoft UK, said: ‘The software industry in the UK is growing rapidly, spurred in part by the great ideas and concepts students have. The Software Entrepreneurship Curriculum will help enable the talented people behind these innovations reach the next level. Initiatives like this drive further growth by making sure the best resources are available and helping people to develop the right skills for future success.”

EBIN527 ‘Software Innovation and Entrepreneurship’

In a fast-moving world in which software and web technologies are constantly evolving, starting and running a successful software business requires an in-depths understanding of software markets, software business models, software distribution and software business management aspects, in addition to a deep understanding of the innovative potential of software, web and mobile technologies.

Software is a fundamental ingredient of today’s businesses and many e-businesses have over time transformed into software companies. Amazon.com for example has become a cloud-computing provider and offers pure software products and services in addition to its traditional e-commerce offerings.

EBIN527 ‘Software Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ is a new module designed to teach students practical and theoretical knowledge about emerging technologies and how to exploit them to build successful software businesses.

Topics include:

Technology: Location-aware web, Geoweb, Sensor web, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality

Software Product Engineering: Agile and Lean Software Development, Value-Based Software Engineering, Lean Start-up Theory

Software Business: Software Markets, Software Business Models, Software Distribution, Software Ecosystems, Software Business Management.
