The action dimension
At LUMS we believe that management theories need testing in the 'real world' and that enabling students to do so as an integral part of our programmes creates superb learning opportunities. It is not simply about outcomes, though those are naturally vital. We focus equally on the process of management, and on reflecting critically on what you learn about yourself and others in the experience.
As an EMBA student, you are of course ideally placed to try out your new knowledge and awareness, and to give your organisation the benefits of your developing skills.
Learning through action – unlocking organisational issues
Each programme module is complemented by a practical, work-focused assignment, where you apply and evaluate some of the theories you have just learnt, effectively acting as an internal consultant and generating actionable suggestions for your organisation. These cover all areas of business operations – from strategy and marketing to operations and finance – so will engage you with all parts of your own organisation.
As part of that process, you also reflect on your own learning. The biggest and most sustained piece of action research is the organisational project which you conduct over the final months of your MBA.
The Consultancy Challenge – a structured look inside another organisation
The benefits of looking inside another, perhaps very different, organisation, can be tremendous – so within the EMBA programme you don’t stay solely within your own familiar environment. The team-based Consultancy Challenge in Year 2 takes you into a new organisational context, requiring you to apply your consultancy skills and accumulated knowledge to find solutions to a live issue for a client organisation.

International perspectives
International business issues are integrated throughout the EMBA programme, but the International Business in Context elective, with its one-week intensive study visit, offers a chance to see first-hand how management theories and concepts relate to overseas business management and international trade.
Visits to a range of different organisations are a key part of this tour, together with lectures and seminars with leading academics from the host country.
