Why choose the MA in Human Resources and Consulting?

Lancaster University Management School entrance

Choosing between the various HRD and HRM programmes on offer can be difficult. What sets this MA apart is its central focus on learning, which we view as a prerequisite for real development – whether that development be organisational or individual.

International reputation

As part of a top-ranked Management School, the Department of Management Learning and Leadership was the first of its kind in Europe, and since 1974 has been at the forefront of research and thinking into how managers learn. We work with a wide range of organisations to translate ideas into practice. The resulting expertise in management and organisational learning has been influential in developing policy and practice in all kinds of organisations: commercial companies, large and small, public sector bodies, charities and governmental agencies.

Access the latest research thinking

Staff teaching on the programme are active in research, and their work informs the programme content. You can therefore discuss and debate ideas with leading researchers in the field of organisational learning.

Theory into practice – gain real world experience

In this video, Dr Kiran Trehan, programme tutor, explains why she thinks the MA in HR and Consulting unique.

Sally Abou Ouf graduated from the MA in 2010. In this video she describes her experience on the programme.

The programme brings in HRD professionals as contributors to sessions – including some of our own alumni. This provides very important practitioner perspectives on the issues facing organisations and the challenges of applying theory to real situations.

Applying your knowledge is not just something you will do after you complete the course – the Organisational Diagnosis and Consulting project takes you into a client company for a short period, to work on a live issue which the organisation has identified as important.

Freedom to explore your own topics

The assessment process is designed so that you can tailor your assignments to your own professional background or the direction you would like your career to take – enabling you to explore issues of special interest and relevance to your particular context.

Recognised pathway to PhD study

UK applicants with a good honours degree who wish to go on to study for a PhD can apply for an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) 1+3 Studentship. This covers all tuition fees and living expenses for the MA and, provisionally, for a further three years’ study for a PhD. The scheme is also open to EU students, on a fees-only basis.

All work and no play…?

With more than 650 Masters students in the School, and around 140 on MPhil and PhD programmes, your opportunities to make new friends and professional contacts from around the world are second to none. Lancaster University Management School offers a lively graduate community, with a rich and varied academic and social life.
