Advanced Human Resources Management
Module leader: Professor Bill Cooke
Duration and timing: total of 24 hours, Summer Term
Overview
The aim of this elective is to give you an understanding of the contemporary nature and practices of HRM, particularly since most MBA graduates are likely to encounter HRM in various line management/specialist roles and some may take career paths leading to HRM specialisms.
The module will start by addressing the nature of HRM and the practices through which it connects to issues of strategy. It will then consider HRM in a global context, particularly HRM practices and issues in multi-national corporations. In the final part of the module we will look at contemporary themes and concerns for HR management, notably empowerment; wellbeing, health and absence; and managing diversity.
Where possible we will draw on MBA students’ own experiences of HRM, combining these with case studies, videos, and presentations and discussions with practitioners.
Assessment
A case analysis of a real organisation, looking at HR practices, plus a group presentation.
