Advanced Leadership
Module leader: Dr Ken Parry, Bond University
Duration and timing: total of 24 hours, Summer Term
Overview
This elective is about everyday contexts and long term relationships. The focus is not about becoming a leader at the end of the module; rather the emphasis is on helping you move towards becoming a ‘better leader’. The elective is founded on a philosophical assumption that leadership is not a gift of the few who happen to be born to lead: it is more a learnt process related to particular contexts. In essence, everyone can lead… perhaps the key is understanding how to develop the capability to lead.
The module is designed to help you to:
- understand leadership from a variety of perspectives
- appreciate the constructed process of leadership
- develop an awareness of individuals constructions of leadership
- be able to apply this knowledge to leadership practice
The elective consists of seven workshops exploring different areas of leadership theory and practice, connected through the use of DVDs, music, drama and experiential exercises. Areas covered will include the nature of leadership, constituted leadership, leadership ethics, transformational and transactional leadership, and leadership learning.
Assessment
The assessment process seeks to move from understanding to application. There are two elements: a leadership speech and a case study.
