Risk, Crisis and Continuity Management

Module leader: Dr Brian McGarrie

Duration and timing: total of 24 hours, Summer Term

Overview

Recent catastrophic events such as the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, triggered by Japan’s earthquake and tsunami, and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have focused attention on the importance of risk and crisis management, particularly in global corporations. There is an array of types of crisis that can impact organisations, including labour strikes, environmental spills, executive kidnapping, unlawful discrimination, product recalls, product tampering, security breaches, product/service boycotts, natural disasters, counterfeiting, terrorism and the like. No organisation is immune to crises.

This module gives you an opportunity to learn how complex organisations promote efficient risk management and crisis programmes to prepare better for future disasters and crises. Through case studies and interaction with real businesses, it allows you to create new strategic risk management processes. Tools and techniques will be offered to bring to life conceptual frameworks and theory. The focus will then move away from risk management and prevention to dealing with the consequences of risk failure in the form of emergencies, crises and disasters.

The focus is on strategic, organisational, project, supply chain and business risk management, including the application of risk analysis tools and techniques. You will also gain an understanding of the risk and crisis management implementation process. The module will also stress the importance of business continuity plans. Overall, the module will look in detail at theory and practice, dealing with the UK and international systems, providing an understanding of the conceptual and practical aspects of risk and crisis management.
