The action dimension: MBA consulting projects
At LUMS we believe that management theories need testing in the 'real world' and that enabling students to do this while still on our programmes creates superb learning opportunities. It is not simply about outcomes, though those are naturally vital. We focus equally on the process of management, and on what you learn about yourself and others in the experience. That's where the Lancaster philosophy of critical thinking can help.
"The Lancaster MBA is a compelling mix of rich academic content laced with 'live' consulting projects: this practice-based approach sets LUMS apart from other business schools."

Three consulting opportunities
While other programmes may give you a chance to get out into the 'real world' on summer projects, on the Lancaster MBA we go further – you have three consulting opportunities – or 'Challenges' – and client-based project work starts in your very first weeks.
So throughout the programme, you can reflect on how your own skills, as a manager, leader and team player, are being tested and refined in so many different ways.
You're also adding to your organisational experience, and gaining insights into previously unfamiliar sectors.
The New Venture Challenge
Here you work in teams with an external client to develop a business plan for a new commercial or social enterprise. This facilitates team-building and increases your understanding of the new venture planning process. >> more information
The Consultancy Challenge
In February you receive an intensive introduction to consultancy and soft skills tool-kits, and then in small teams tackle a focused consultancy assignment, within a tight time-frame. The clients are typically medium-sized enterprises, based in the North West and requiring solutions to marketing, HR, strategy or operational problems. >> more information
The project experience
"My summer project was with British Vita, a global leader in polyurethane foam manufacturing. It involved looking at supply chain dynamics within the organisation and influencing strategy by employing collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment techniques. The project was a success – and I, along with my project partner, was able to demonstrate improvements to the CEO through a pilot programme running on our tailor-made recommendations."

The Corporate Challenge or internship
Undertaken in the summer, this is a significant component of your MBA assessment, and involves a major project with a global company, plus an individual assignment. You can undertake either a consultancy project for a client company or an internship, and in both cases this can be in the UK or abroad.
Recent clients include EDF Energy, Centrica Energy, BASF, Manchester Airports Group, PwC, HSBC and the Co-operative Group. >> more information
