MBA Induction, Skills and Careers Programme

Group on induction exerciseThe MBA begins with an intensive two-week Induction, Skills and Careers Programme.

It is designed to smooth your return to academic studies, to help you develop successful working relationships with the other participants, and to understand the skills and action required to achieve a successful academic and career outcome from your MBA investment.

The programme incorporates a wide variety of activities, such as group exercises, presentations, projects, lectures, workshops and informal social events. It introduces you to the Lancaster University campus, the city, the MBA faculty and – arguably most important of all – enables you to get to know the other students.

You will have short introductions to the various elements of the first term's programme and to other facilities within the School. You will also learn more about the international exchange opportunities and related language support classes.

You will also be starting on a structured programme of self-development, as you experience your first activities on the MBA Career Management Programme and Lancaster's special Mindful Manager module, both integral parts of the MBA.

Gearing up for action

During the programme you will work together in groups on exercises which demand both teamwork skills and individual enterprise. Some of these tasks will be based within the School, but others will be outdoors, taking advantage of our wonderful location near the English Lake District.

You will also be introduced to some of the critical thinking skills and concepts of leadership which will play an important role in your consultancy interventions through the programme.

These skills are called into play early on as in these first two weeks you will also start your first piece of action-based consultancy: meeting the companies you will be working with on the New Venture Challenge.

Graduate Profiles

My advice to anyone thinking about doing an MBA is look first at the rankings and value for money, then talk to the alumni and the people representing the colleges at fairs. When I rang Lancaster I had an immediate response: they had the personal touch.
