For many students, the desire to boost their career prospects and perhaps accelerate their progression to senior roles is a key reason why they study for a Masters degree. In recognition of this, Lancaster University Management School provides a range of facilities to support you in your career development and job search process.

Careers programme
The MSc in Management programme has a dedicated Careers Advisor, who provides a full careers programme which includes:
- Workshops on career management and on how to improve job search skills, tailor your CV or improve your interview technique, etc
- One-to-one guidance and assistance on career planning and job search
- Employer presentations
Many of the workshops are run by major companies, giving you first-hand insights into what companies look for in their recruitment and enabling you to improve skills which employers regard as essential attributes of good candidates.
Careers resources
The University's Careers Service has a well-stocked resource room, where you can find information on many major employers and other key data to help you in preparing applications. The Lancaster University Business Enterprise Centre also runs workshops and advice sessions for those who are considering starting up their own business.
The internet has become a key source of access to job vacancies and careers information worldwide and provides an essential tool for your job search. Elsewhere on this site, you can access the Management School’s online careers resources, with tips on job-hunting, guidance on various job-related issues and links to many useful sites.
Taking personal responsibility
Your involvement and commitment to the job-search process is critical. While we can provide help and skills training to assist your job search, we cannot get a job for you, and hence you need to actively job-seek. Only you can demonstrate your personal skills, characteristics and motivation to potential employers and convince them that you are the best candidate for a job. Starting your job search early can also be all-important, particularly where you are applying for graduate management schemes which typically have deadlines early in the academic year.
Both the Management in Practice module and the MSc research project give you practical experience that is valued by employers, and the focus on your personal development which takes place throughout the year, will also develop your employability.
Where do our graduates go?
Each year the mix of final destinations will vary, reflecting the different interests and aspirations of the students within the class.
Companies who recruited our graduates recently include Dow Chemicals, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, KPMG, BAE Systems, Marks and Spencer, Nissan, Philips, Nielsen and Bank of China.
A small number of students go on to further study, some taking up the opportunities offered within our Study Abroad programme. Others set up their own business, based on ideas developed while on the MSc.
We aim to develop the managers of the future, who will go on to leadership roles in global organisations.
Working in the UK
International students should note that the UK government has strict immigration controls which restrict nationals from outside the EU gaining employment in the UK. Studying in the UK does not circumvent these controls, and while a few students may find employment in the UK after the programme, the normal outcome for international students is to return to their home country to take up employment.
