Innovation in Practice II

As the new era opens opportunities for thousands of new and established firms, there is a strong need to learn how these firms develop their innovation and drive their competitive advantage based on the innovation practice. The module is designed in response to the need to apply innovation strategy to many aspects of small business.

The purpose of the module is to give students necessary skills and tools to manage and define innovation strategy from the perspective of small firms. After this module students will understand why certain organisations are more creative than others, as evident in innovative products, services, processes, and strategy. Students will also gain practical skills in analysing organisations in order to make them more innovative.

Based on the thorough theoretical foundation of innovation delivered in Innovation in Practice I, students will put their knowledge in practice by engaging with small businesses. During this experience, they will learn how to discover, evaluate and exploit innovation in practice. They will also learn why some companies are more innovative than others, what capabilities are needed, what strategies can be employed to innovate successfully and how firms capture value from an innovation.

The module is built around a combination of lectures/workshops and interaction with real firms, in order to facilitate the learning process based on the real innovation problems faced by firms. Around the interaction with firms, an inter-disciplinary understanding including innovation issues from management, marketing, R&D, production and logistic perspective is built. In this engagement, students are able to practise their skills and knowledge relating to innovation strategy. In addition, the lectures/workshops cover a number of different simulations and cases of various innovation strategies, drawn from the business world. Using case studies and discussions during the workshops, students learn to exercise their knowledge and skill to develop their solution and innovation strategy for firms.
