Principles of Project Management

Duration and timing: 40 hours, Autumn and Spring Terms

Module leader: Ian Cammack

Overview

This core module provides an introduction to the purpose, processes and methodologies of project management – in terms of both relevant theory and literature and as evidenced within project management practice. Through
presentation and discussion of your existing knowledge, tutor experience and
examples of good practice, you will develop a more informed understanding of the
purpose of project management and engage with a variety of underlying issues –
strategic, operational and tactical.

The module has a strong practical focus. It aims to increase your knowledge of
industry-standard practice, aligned with the APM and PMI bodies of knowledge.  It helps to build your confidence in using the key methodologies, tools and techniques and identifying which are appropriate for particular environments.

The module workshops cover a wide range of topics, within the following key
themes:

  • introduction to project management
  • project definition
  • project planning
  • risk management
  • project execution and control
  • project closure

Each of these critical aspects of project management is explored from conceptual, theoretical and practical perspectives.

The module spans the first two terms, providing a broad and deep engagement with project management topics.

Assessment

There are three elements to the assessment: group project, individual assignment and class based test.

The module also contributes to the integrative case study exam held in the Summer Term.
