In 2009 LUMS established a new student exchange partnership with Guanghua School of Management in Peking University in Beijing, China. Dr Radka Newton who initiated this partnership recognised a need to offer a student exchange programme in China and introduced this pilot for undergraduate students.

“I was pleasantly surprised that we had three students interested in the pilot stage of this exchange,” says Dr Newton. “And all three successfully completed a semester in Beijing. In 2010 we have three students again and we are considering expanding our exchange agreements in more Asian countries. Students are becoming more adventurous and more aware of the need to have some international experience to enhance their CVs.”

Guanghua School of Management in Peking University is a top Chinese management school where most modules are taught in English. Our third year undergraduate students were lucky to be able to attend MBA level classes. The School also organised some fantastic culture trips and company visits. One of the students, Karl Liiva, originally from Estonia, commented on his experience:

“I had a great time learning about a culture that is very different to what I have experienced so far. I have experienced first-hand both Western and Eastern European culture and so being able to add Asian culture to that list is really something valuable for me because all that now creates a bigger picture: a picture that helps me to understand and appreciate the differences.

“I am very happy that I took the opportunity to explore the wonders of Asia, especially at a time when the world is changing rapidly and when China is going through major changes.”
