In June 2010, key members from the Management School leadership team, including the Dean, Professor Sue Cox, met students from a wide range of undergraduate programmes within LUMS to discuss the School's strategy and to ensure progress is made in line with students’ expectations.

The brainstorming session, which was held on 9 June 2010, involved student members of society executive committees, LUMS ambassadors and faculty representatives, all of whom were given a draft copy of the Management School’s strategic plan for the next five years.

Attendees were asked to critique the plan and inject ideas and suggestions as to how it might be improved to better reflect student desires, both now and in the future.

Giving students the opportunity to provide feedback directly to the senior leadership team provides an excellent way for students’ voices to be heard and enables changes to be made swiftly, before problems arise. Collaboration between the School’s management team and students is an example of efforts within LUMS to engage all stakeholders in an open and productive way.

Key outcomes of the meeting included a specific agreement between faculty and students regarding levels of student involvement in sub-committees, and an agreement that it would be beneficial for more emphasis on student induction in the first year of study.

This level of student-faculty collaboration will continue at Lancaster University Management School and is fast becoming part of the “way things work”, ensuring both students' and wider goals are met.
