International forecasting award for Robert Fildes
Published 2 August 2010
Professor Robert Fildes of the Department of Management Science has been appointed an Honorary Fellow of the International Institute of Forecasters (IIF).
The IIF award recognises Robert's ‘outstanding contributions to the field of forecasting through his work on the telecommunications industry and his pursuit of research projects that are firmly grounded in practical issues'.
The award also acknowledges the contribution he has made to forecasting development in three other key areas: research and scholarship, teaching and administration, and service to the Institute or the Journals. The citation states that ‘Robert has provided service to the Institute more than any other member, past or present’.
Robert was one of the four co-founders of the Institute back in 1981, and has been on the editorial board of the International Journal of Forecasting since the publication was founded, including ten years as its Editor-in-Chief. He was also on the initial editorial board of the Journal of Forecasting, and has published widely in the field, from econometrics to judgemental forecasting and evaluations of different approaches.
At LUMS Robert is one of the Directors of the Lancaster Centre for Forecasting, and the fellowship award also recognises the work being done through the Centre’s extensive consultancy work and its programme of courses for forecasting practitioners in the public and private sector.
Robert was delighted to receive the award: ‘there are about 20 fellows, including two Nobel prize winners, so I am in eminent company – and am basking in their reflected glory’.
