The Lancaster China Management Centre (LCMC) has recently awarded studentships of £500 to two LUMS students who have successfully gained a place on the International Summer Programme (ISP) at Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou, China.

The two studentships were offered on a competitive basis - entrants were judged on academic performance and a personal statement of interest and motivation for participating in the ISP. The two lucky students, both in their first year of the BBA in European Management, will be able to use the studentships towards the cost of their international flights to China, for the start of the ISP in July this year.

Director of the LCMC, Professor David Brown,  expressed his delight that the LCMC studentships had attracted such a level of interest from students at LUMS and pointed out that the Sun Yat Sen International Summer Programme "provides students with ‘the opportunity to have the experience of a lifetime".

Winning student, Katharina Büchter, commented on her delight at being selected for the studentship:

“I am extremely happy to have been awarded the LCMC studentship to be able to go to the International Summer Programme at Sun Yat Sen University. I hope to gain knowledge and inspiration from this programme. I also feel a kind of obligation towards the Chinese world. Expecting integration to work, every side has to put an effort and I would be honoured to have this opportunity of learning about this, for me still unknown, world”

Nicolaas Hackbarth, the second recipient of the LCMC studentship, explained his motivations for applying for the award:

“I hold the view that exploring the Chinese culture enriches my studies by preparing me for a new globalized business world coined increasingly by Chinese influence. Even before I started my studies in Lancaster and gained first insights into the world of business, I realized that China needs to be assessed as the new leader of emerging economies”

The ISP at Sun Yat Sen University is a three week programme, which focuses on Chinese Language, Politics, Economics and Cultural Studies. The course includes; academic lectures focusing on economics in China, visits to local Chinese companies and seminars and workshops focusing on Chinese cultural studies - including an introduction to Chinese medicine and food.
