Foundation students from Lancaster's International Study Centre took part in a 'Green Idea' business game at Lancaster University Management School in March. The business game gave the students a chance to experience many aspects of undergraduate study at LUMS.

The International Study Centre prepares foundation students for their studies at Lancaster University and every year many of these students decide to progress to Lancaster University Management School.

Dr Radka Newton, The International Programmes Director at LUMS said: “For LUMS it is very important to encourage interaction between the Foundation programnme students and our current students and academics to help the Foundation students make the right decisions about which degree to pursue at LUMS – and also get advice on university life in general. Every year we invite the students to our Open Days but this year we wanted to try something different.

Dr Newton worked closely with the LUMS Student Ambassadors, Skrima Vizinyte and Jonas Klimas (both Marketing students), and designed a business game idea that required interaction between the foundation programme students and LUMS student ambassadors.

Foundation students had to come up with an environmentally friendly initiative which could be implemented on Lancaster University Campus. Participants had to complete a series of tasks and submit them via email to LUMS student ambassadors who then provided the teams with detailed feedback via Facebook. The finals were held in Dragon’s Den style with the LUMS careers manager, Louise Briggs and the Study Group marketing manager Adam Mitchell on the judging panel.

The event was a great success and 21 participants successfully completed the business challenge.

“From our point of view, we were amazed by the level of engagement of the participants,” said Jonas. “Most of the teams submitted all the tasks on time with complete answers to all the questions. We were delighted by their level of knowledge of business – both in general and in more specific areas like marketing, finance and operations. Furthermore, most of the ideas the students came up with were really interesting and well worth considering for setting up at Lancaster University.”

From the feedback we know that the Foundation students had a great experience and gained useful business knowledge as well as insight of what it is like to be a student in Lancaster University Management School.

Minh Ngoc, one of the winning participants sent a thank you message to all the organisers: “Thank you so much for everything you made for us! I received not only a prize but also many lessons about responsibilities, teamwork, presentations, etc. Moreover, thanks to this game, I had a chance to meet lots of interesting people. Hope we can take part in other games at LUMS again. See you at the next game!”
