LUMS makes top four in National Placement and Internship Awards

For the second year in a row, the LUMS Careers, Alumni and Employer Relations team made it to the final four in the National Placement and Internship Awards, which took place on Wednesday 18 January at City University in London. The LUMS team was one of 30 entries for the main award - Best University Placement/Careers Service.

New Employer Grant for SMEs looking to take on Apprentices

Student inventors seek funds to manufacture new products in China

​Student entrepreneurs with bright ideas are being encouraged at Lancaster University, where two new products are being developed for the mass market by undergraduates. One of the products is a water bottle which refills with juice invented by Zac Garton, who is studying for a BA in Management and Entrepreneurship at Lancaster University Management School.

Economy Watch: 'Breeding The Culture of Greed'

Professor Cary Cooper is quoted in Economy Watch, discussing bankers' bonuses: "The rule ought to be that until the entire bank is profitable, no individual should get a bonus. Some of them were working at RBS when it went bust, so they can partly be held responsible. In hindsight, the Government was in a rush and panicking a bit."

LUMS students at prestigious New York conference

Two LUMS students attended a unique conference, held over four days in New York City and Washington DC, in February. The International Conference on Cultural Diplomacy and the UN brought together 140 students from top universities in the USA and Europe, with representatives from government, NGOs and the commercial world.

Lancaster graduate gets top role with Virgin Atlantic in India

Stephen King, who graduated from Lancaster University Management School in 2002 with a BSc in Operational Research and Operations Management, was appointed as General Manager-India for Virgin Atlantic in November 2011. The Independent: '45,000 caught cheating at Britain's universities'

Bloomberg: 'Soaring Target2 Imbalances Stoke German Risk Angst: Euro Credit'

Bloomberg quotes Lancaster economist John Whittaker in an article about German angst over the funding of European debt. "The Germans are very much justified in their concern. The Target2 liabilities are just as risky and just as real as holding the government bonds of Greece and other peripherals," says Whittaker.

International Business Times: 'Culture of Greed'

Professor Cary Cooper is quoted in a story in the International Business Times on UK banks paying top executives big bonuses. "The Government missed the opportunity when they bailed out RBS and Lloyd's in 2008 to put clauses in the contracts saying there could be no bonuses for anyone until the public-owned banks were back in profit."

EY graduate gains top marks

Ann Zhuang, who graduated from Lancaster’s EY Degree in July 2011, achieved top marks in her 'Test of Professional Skills in Financial Reporting' in a recent ICAS exam. Ann scored 92 in total and was the most successful candidate in the UK.

People Management: 'Two-thirds of NHS staff raise staff shortage concerns'

People Management magazine quotes Professor Cary Cooper on a survey that finds that 30 per cent of NHS staff suffered work-related stress last year: "The high level of presenteeism, people attending work when too ill to do their job, may be because they were worried about their job security or felt pressured from managers to be at work."

The Guardian: 'The case for a chief social scientist'

Professor Cary Cooper and Stephen Anderson (executive director at the Academy of Social Sciences) argue the case for the government to appoint a 'Chief Social Scientist', in an opinion piece in the Guardian. "Social science makes key contributions to some of society's most pressing and costly issues, including climate change, wellbeing, social cohesion, children and ageing. It is just too important in the national agenda not to have a seat at the top scientific adviser table where the real influence takes place."

The Times: 'Market forces put award in peril'

2007 Executive MBA graduate Phillippa Williamson, who is now CEO of the Serious Fraud Office, is quoted in a story in the Times about public sector MBAs. "An MBA gave me an opportunity to acquire new leadership skills and techniques, to develop my strategic thinking, critical analysis, and get a 'bigger picture' understanding," she says.
