The work of the Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) Careers Team was recently recognised at the Rate My Placements 2011 Awards Ceremony at CASS Business School in London. LUMS was nominated in the category ‘Best University Placement or Careers Service’ by graduate employers, academic colleagues, students and alumni and was placed in the top four from 48 nominations.

Louise Briggs, Employability, Enterprise and Careers Manager said: “Over the last five years the number of LUMS students progressing to graduate job or to further study has risen by over 20%, despite tough economic conditions and an increasingly competitive graduate job market. This award recognises the joint effort of the LUMS careers team, placement service and academic programmes in highlighting the importance of employability and careers knowledge.”

The LUMS Careers Team offers a range of support and advice to students at each stage of their journey into work, from exploring suitable careers or further study to practical help and advice at each stage of the recruitment process. Students have the opportunity to have application forms checked, improve their CVs and cover letters, practise psychometric tests and attend mock interviews and assessment centres. The LUMS Careers Team also enjoys a close relationship with many graduate employers who support Lancaster University Management School through skills workshops, career information talks and one-to-one guidance for students.

Darren Page, Graduate Recruitment Manager at Deloitte, said: “Careers staff in Lancaster University Management School invest a significant amount of time and personal support to their students, in their search for placements and graduate positions, and through the regular dialogue between themselves and employers. This results in the really personal approach which they are able to provide to their students.”

The awards also proved very successful for BBA Management student Chris Jones who was a top-four finalist in the category of ‘Best Placement Student’.  Chris was nominated by his employer Amadeus for his outstanding contribution to the company during his twelve-month placement at the Amadeus Head Office in Madrid.
