The Management School's Meet the Employer Event, held on 1 February 2012, was our biggest yet. The annual event, which has been running since 2007, brought together representatives from 27 organisations with participants including graduate recruiters, Lancaster alumni, and LUMS students on placement.

Meet the Employer Event 2012The informal event is run by the Careers, Alumni and Employer Relations team for all LUMS students, providing them with the opportunity to meet with a wide range of companies and experienced professionals in a relaxed setting. From first year undergraduates to those on Masters programmes, students attended to gather information about graduate jobs and internship opportunities as well as to gain insights into working for different organisations.

As well as many of the big names in graduate recruitment (including Accenture, Barclays, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, HSBC and IBM) organisations such as BUNAC, TeachFirst and Lancashire County Council provided information on alternative opportunities for work experience and employment.

Representatives from Lancashire County Council commented It’s the first time we’ve been to this event and we’d like to develop the relationship with Lancaster University more. We enjoyed meeting some very enthusiastic students, and being able to give them advice on our application process.”

Meet the Employer event 2012Eight alumni volunteered their time to participate, enjoying their involvement in the event as well as using it to re-connect with old Lancaster contacts, revisiting the campus, and discovering new ways to be involved with the University.

Daniel Merritt (BA History, 1987), who now works for Santander as a Customer Engagement Manager in Retails Liabilities, said that It has been really rewarding to come back and be part of this kind of event”. He, and fellow Lancaster alumnus Myles Harrison (BA English Language and the Media, 2010) commented on the value of the event as a two way process – both for passing on information to students and also learning from them how Santander can provide a better experience for future candidates and employees.

The Meet the Employer event is part of a busy annual calendar of Careers Events run by the Careers, Alumni and Employer Relations team. We hope to involve more Lancaster alumni in the future and very much welcome their contributions.
