Profile

Jill Johnes has been in the Department of Economics of Lancaster University Management School since 1988, having previously worked at British Aerospace, Warton Division. Jill followed the publication of her book on Performance Indicators in 1990 with further research into the construction of indicators of university performance. In 1991 she was one of the first to receive the Sir Alastair Pilkington University of Lancaster Teaching Award. From 1994-2001 she took a break from research following the birth of her third child, and continued to work on a part-time teaching only basis. In 2001, Jill resumed her research interests in assessing the efficiency of organisations, using frontier techniques such as data envelopment analysis (DEA) and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA).   She has applied these techniques to schools in Kuwait, further education establishments in England and universities in England.  More recently she has developed an interest in the efficiency of financial institutions.  In particular, she has been measuring the efficiency of Islamic banks compared to conventional banks in the Gulf region, and investigating the efficiency of banks in emerging EU economies. She is currently estimating the efficiency of English universities using a parametric multiple-output multiple-input distance function. She was recently (2011) awarded a National Teaching Fellowship for her excellence in teaching.
