Stephanie BirdStephanie Bird

Director of HR Capability, CIPD

Stephanie has spent over 20 years working on the people, organisation and cultural change issues critical to business success. After degrees in Chemistry, her initial HR career was spent with ICI.

She held HR leadership roles in a number of technology and professional services organisations. She was a partner at KPMG, has run her own consulting and executive search business, and was European Vice President for HR at CSC Computer Sciences Corporation during a time of rapid international growth. She and a number of CSC colleagues then co-founded Differentis, a niche Management and IT Consultancy.

She joined Dell as UK HR Director in 2003, and subsequently led the development and execution of Talent & Resourcing strategies for Dell’s 26 country EMEA organisation, through a time of significant growth.

She moved to BP plc in 2006, as Vice President HR, responsible for talent and organisation capability for the group. This included running a group wide capability review, and developing more insightful talent management approaches and toolkits.

She joined the CIPD as Director of HR Capability in 2009. She is responsible for developing standards, qualifications, development programmes and research that build the capability of the HR profession and its contribution to the sustainable performance of organizations. She is also Director of Public Policy, working to influence government policy on people and work issues based on CIPD’s evidence and experience.

Stephanie is a Director and Trustee of the national charity Creativity, Culture and Education (CCE).

Paul ChesworthPaul Chesworth

European HR Director, Vodafone Group Services Limited

Paul studied Economics and History at Bradford University. He joined Vodafone in 2004. He is now HR Director, European Region, having previously worked as HR Director, UK. In this role he sat on the Vodafone UK Board, reporting directly to the UK CEO, with responsibility for a team of 160 staff, holding responsibility for all aspects of Human Resources Policy and Practice. He was instrumental in driving the Vodafone UK Employee Experience Strategy and the employee ‘touchpoint’ framework. He has previously worked in a number of HR roles. In the late 1980s he worked in an employment relations role at Leyland DAF. During eight years at British Aerospace he worked in roles covering learning and development, group employment policy and then organisation and resourcing. In 1999 he became Group Human Resources and Quality Director at Matra BAe Dynamics. In 2001 he moved to MBDA and spent three years as Group Human Resources and Business Improvement Director

Gerry JohnsonGerry Johnson

Emeritus Professor of Strategic Management

Gerry Johnson is Emeritus Professor of Strategic Management at Lancaster University Management School and a Senior Fellow of the Advanced Institute of Management.  He has taught at Aston University Management Centre, where he obtained his PhD, Manchester Business School and has been a professor at Cranfield School of Management, Strathclyde Graduate School of Business and Lancaster University Management School.

He is co-author of Europe's best selling strategic management text Exploring  Strategy (Prentice Hall, 9th edition, 2011), which is used in most of the UK business schools and  is also the author of numerous other books and papers on Strategic Management.
 
His research and expertise is focused on strategy development, the management of strategic change; topics on which he has addressed executives and academics throughout the world.  As a consultant, he a founding partner of Strategy Explorers and works at a senior level with management teams on these and other strategic issues.

Tony McCarthyTony McCarthy

Global HR Director, ENRC Plc

Tony McCarthy at present is Global HR director for ENRC Plc.  Formerly he has held a range of global senior management roles such as a Group Director, People & Organisational Development for British Airways.  Prior to BA, Tony spent five years on the Board of Royal Mail Group as HR Director and almost 25 years with BAE Systems where he held a range of top level HR roles, including the post of Group HR Director.  Tony has a track record built on success and experience.  He is a fellow of Lancaster University and of the Sunningdale Institute, which is part of the National School of Government. He is non-executive Director of Marshall-James Consultancy, an employee relations business.  He has previously held posts of the chair of the Centre for Performance-led HR at Lancaster University Management School and was a Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Tim MillerDr Tim Miller

Director, Property, Research & Assurance and Chairman, Standard Chartered Korea

Tim joined Standard Chartered Bank (the "Bank") in May 2000 as Group Head of Human Resources ("HR") and was appointed a Director of the Bank in December 2004. 

Today, Tim is responsible for the Corporate Real Estate, Corporate Secretariat, Legal, Compliance & Assurance, Internal Audit and Global Research functions, collective known as Property, Research and Assurance ("PRA").  Together, these functions play a critical role in driving the Bank's strategy of strong organic growth supplemented by selective acquisitions and ensuring exemplary standards of governance and ethics.

Reflecting the need to build scalability and align activities to the Bank's risk appetite, the operating and governance models of the assurance functions have been extensively refined, providing a robust control environment during a period of unprecedented growth at the Bank.

This has also ensured the Bank has been in a strong position to address the increasing regulatory oversight of the financial sector in the UK and globally. 

In addition to his PRA role, Tim is also Chairman of Standard Chartered Korea with responsibility for strategy, growth and governance in Korea.

He is also accountable for the Bank's environment programme and is the Chairman of the Banks' Environment Committee.

Outside the Bank, Tim is a Non-Executive Director of Michael Page International plc and Chairman of the Governing Body, School of Oriental & African Studies ("SOAS").

Jackie OrmeJackie Orme

CEO, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)

Jackie Orme has been CEO of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) since April 2008.  Jackie has been an HR practitioner for more than 17 years.  She has worked across a broad range of sectors and HR specialisms.

Her early years were spent in the Department of Employment and the Institute of Chartered Accountants before moving to work in the steel industry based in South Wales.

Prior to joining the CIPD Jackie Orme spent 12 years working for PepsiCo – including 7 years leading the UK and Ireland HR function and sitting on both the UK Executive Board of PepsiCo International and the global PepsiCo International HR Council.
