International Mobility: Emerging Markets, Flexible Policies and Economic Markets

The Centre was commissioned by GMAC in 2008 to produce three White Papers looking at strategic issues in the field of international mobility in the financial services, pharmaceuticals and high technology sectors.  In 2009 Paul Sparrow co-authored reports with Gill Aldred of Brookfield Global Relocation Services on topics including International Mobility: Introducing Flexibility Into Policy Structures; International Mobility in the Financial Services Sector: the Challenges of Individualised Flexibility; and International Mobility: Impact of the Current Economic Climate.  The last of these reports  has been recognised with an Expatica HR Top-5 Industry Survey Award for Excellence in HR surveys, scoring highly for offering novel or unique cutting edge findings and well-researched and presented data.

All of the reports can be accessed through the Brookfield Global Relocation Services Knowledge Centre (requires registration)

How are changes in business model changing the international mobility agenda?

  • What types of knowledge and capabilities are firms having to build in developing markets and how does this shape the role of international assignments?
  • In handling mobility to developing countries, how do firms handle the trade off between sending those who are willing to go (having enough people committed to assignment) versus being able to send the most talented (competent)?
  • What are the pressures/ forces that are driving greater standardisation in policy and practice, or more localisation of terms and conditions and a “lighter” touch from the centre?
  • How do firms argue for and measure the return on investment (ROI) for the international mobility (IM) function or individual assignments?
  • How does this calculation change when you they are sourcing into developing markets?
