BBA (Hons) Management

UCAS code: N200

Overview

The BBA in Management (N200) and the BBA in Management (Study Abroad) (N201) are four-year honours degree programmes in which the third year is spent in paid managerial employment in a suitable organisation.

These degrees appeal to those considering a future career in management, whether in the UK or abroad. They produce graduates who are numerate, possess good communication skills, are conversant with the wide range of subjects which make up management and have the advantage of having studied certain areas in depth. The variety of approaches covered and the challenge of integrating them mean that the work is intellectually demanding as well as being practically relevant.

The BBA programme covers all the main areas of the theory and practice of management and includes the use of guest speakers from industry. In addition, team activities include new venture planning and simulation exercises, where you will develop problem-solving and presentational skills and learn how the different areas of management fit together. Because of the overall excellence and breadth of the Management School, a very wide range of options is also available, covering all aspects of theory and practice.

Students who already possess significant managerial experience may omit the third year (the work placement year) and still qualify for a BBA. If you wish to take a three-year degree programme without a work placement year and do not already possess significant managerial work experience, you should apply for the BSc in Business Studies (N102) or the BSc in Business Studies (Study Abroad) (N103).

Requirements

These are guidelines rather than fixed rules to be applied in all circumstances. Applicants with non-UK and other qualifications are treated on their individual merits.

A levels: AAA (General Studies is normally included as a full A-Level. 2 AS-Levels may be considered as the equivalent of one A-Level or one AVCE.)

AVCE - up to six units can come from AVCEs.

Preference - Three A-levels.

Key Skills - not included in offer.

International Baccalaureate - 36 overall (with 16 points from the best three higher level courses)

Scottish Highers may be acceptable - AAAAA - but we prefer you to have extra qualifications (e.g. CSYS) as well.

BTEC - at least two thirds Distinctions, the remainder Merits.

A good array of GCSE grades is also essential for all applicants. For BBA Management (N200) these must normally both be at least a Grade B.

Foundation and Access programmes for international students: we consider applicants who have completed the High School certificate in their home country with above average grades, and who follow a recognised Access or Foundation programme in the UK. For example we have accepted in the past holders of FY qualifications from Bellerbys and the Warwick HEFP, with above average grades/marks.

Applicants whose first language is not English must normally achieve a mark of at least 6.5 in IELTS or 580 in TOEFL (237 on the computer based test).

None of the above is applied mechanistically - the admissions tutor will also examine closely the rest of your application form, especially the reference and the personal statement.

NB If you are accepted on the BBA Management (N200) programme, there may be the opportunity to transfer to N201 - the BBA Management with a year abroad - once you are here, subject to satisfactory progress and the availability of exchange places. Conversely, it will be easy to transfer in the opposite direction, if you decide you do not wish to go on the year abroad after all.

The year of paid work placement

Students on the BBA Management (both N200 and N201) spend their third year in paid employment. You will be working in a responsible management or management-related position and generally will be treated by your employer as if you were a graduate employee.

This experience greatly enhances first employment prospects - indeed, many students are offered graduate jobs by the organisations they worked for on placement. For all students, the experience helps decide what sort of career they wish to follow and the sort of organisation for which they would like to work. It also enriches final year studies - most students do very well in Year 4 as a direct result of the experience and maturity gained while on placement.

We have a very wide range of organisational contacts and we help you as much as we can to secure a suitable placement, though the final decision is made by yourself and the organisation concerned. Salary depends upon the employer - currently typical is about £16,000 per year but some are as high as £30,000.

You may organise your own placement if you wish, though we must be satisfied that the work involved is sufficiently challenging and relevant to the degree. During your placement you will remain a Lancaster University student and have access to a tutor who will visit you at your workplace. The placement is not assessed directly, but you will write a dissertation relating to your work in Year 4.

Organisations that have employed our BBA students on placements recently have included:

3M, Accenture, Amadeus, BAE Systems, BMW, Central Government, Debenhams, Fujitsu, GE, Gist, Hays, HP, HSBC, IBM, Innocent, Johnson & Johnson, KPMG, Marks and Spencer, Nestlé, NHS, Reebok, Rolls Royce, Sara Lee, Unilever, VW, Warner Bros and many others, including smaller and more local companies. They cover all business sectors in all parts of the UK.

How to apply

Applications will continue to be accepted until June each year. There is no need to apply for both N200 BBA Management and N201 BBA Management (Study Abroad). If you apply for N201 you will automatically be considered for course N200.

All applications must be made through the Universities' and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). For an application form write to:

Most offers we make are "conditional", i.e. they depend upon your performance in A-Levels or other examinations. If we make you an offer, whether conditional or unconditional, we will at the same time invite you to an Open Day (you will be given a choice of dates).

At your Open Day you will be shown round the University by a current BBA student, attend presentations by staff and students and have opportunities to ask questions about the course, the university and student life in general. We strongly recommend that you attend one of these Open Days if possible.

Assessment

We pride ourselves on our varied and innovative teaching and learning methods. In addition to lectures, tutorials and seminars you will participate in teamwork and role-play exercises, tackle case studies, prepare business plans, write management reports and give oral presentations. This is consistent with an overall design which provides regular interplay between theory and practice.

The "Team Days" for BBA students in the first year are a very unusual feature for an undergraduate degree scheme. Students tell us that they find them immensely enjoyable and rewarding, as well as being highly relevant to the taught material.

You will be assessed by coursework (both individual and team-based) and examination. Typically each of these is given roughly equal weighting in determining your final mark for a course. All examinations take place in the summer term of the year in which the course is taken.

Coursework takes a variety of forms, including group presentations, dissertations, technical exercises, management reports, essays and computer work. Most coursework has to be word-processed; there are computing facilities available with 24-hour access.

Careers

Our graduates have been highly sucessful in finding good, well-paid jobs in all areas of management, working for leading firms such as Accenture, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, McKinsey & Co, BT, Cadburys, Mercedes, Merrill Lynch, MARS, HP, Centrica, Deutsche Bank, BUPA, IBM, British Airways, Debenhams, Boots, Selfridges, KPMG, NHS, Royal Bank of Scotland and a very wide variety of other organisations.
