By University regulation, all Accounting & Finance single major students are required to take AC.F 211, AC.F 212, AC.F 213 and AC.F 214 (see below) which together contribute four of the sixteen Part II half-units (two of eight Part II units). Also for degree purposes, all major students must also take quantitative methods courses appropriate for their particular degree (see details below).
First Year
Students take AC.F 100 and Part I Economics and any third subject.
Students without A-Level Mathematics or equivalent are advised to take a course in Quantitative Methods.
Other Years
Second year: AC.F 211, AC.F 212, AC.F 213, AC.F 214, MNGT 212, MSCI 224 (all half-unit courses)
Third year: Six third year AC.F half-unit courses, choosing any three per term (M and L). Must include Ac.F 301 and AC.F 311, plus at least one Finance course
For Foundation level exemption from some professional examinations, LAW 217, 317 and 318 must be taken.
Further Information
The BA/BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance degree encompasses study of both accounting and finance, and is accredited by the major professional accountancy bodies. The accounting courses involve detailed technical material to enable students to grasp key concepts necessary for analysing and preparing information to meet companies’ external financial reporting requirements. Internal reporting of information, analysis of such information, and the planning and control of organisation activities is also a key part of the accounting courses you will study on this course. The finance courses encompass financial strategy, and the decision-making process for investment and risk management.
Students wishing to attain exemptions from the Professional stage, i.e., higher level, examinations of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS) may be able to do so by taking particular courses specified by the professional body. Advice on this issue is provided by the Undegraduate Programmes Officer, Jill Nixon.
Assessment
The assessment of this degree is on the basis of eight units (sixteen half-units) of assessment.
