BA (Hons) Advertising and Marketing
UCAS code: N501
BSc (Hons) in Marketing Management is one of our undergraduate degree programmes offered in the Marketing Department.
Overview
This degree builds on the Marketing department's long-established success in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Marketing, and adds a special focus on the theory and practice of advertising. The course has been designed by staff with experience in international advertising agencies. This is a three-year degree scheme with some opportunity to study related subjects within the scheme.
Topics studied include the psychology of persuasion and attitude change, semiotic analysis of symbolic communication, the transfer of cultural meaning, statistical methods, strategic advertising management, creative strategy development, media research and planning, advertising research and campaign evaluation, advertising planning using computer simulation technology.
Teaching methods include lectures and small tutorials, as well as a variety of project work in groups developing the skills of working in teams and making presentations. In the final year the course culminates in a real-life advertising research project for advertising agencies and their clients, or on academic advertising research carried out in the Department. There is an option to write an individual dissertation on advertising strategy which allows students to integrate the concepts covered in the course and develop their ideas into a sustained argument in answer to a strategic problem of advertising management.
The programme is supplemented by talks from industry figures. These include speakers from some of the top London agencies, the Advertising Standards Authority and design agencies. The Marketing Department also has links with the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising.
