BSc Business Studies
courses
The BSc (Hons) Business Studies is a three-year full-time programme.
First year
In their first year, all students take three fully-assessed courses. In addition, students who have not studied for more than 18 months in the UK or EU take a special course in ‘Business and British Society’. This is much more than a linguistic and study skills course: it is designed to enable international students to achieve their full academic potential quickly.
“From your time here you know that what you learn will be of real practical value in the business world.”
Adam Bateman graduated with a Business Studies degree in 2005 and joined the NHS graduate training scheme.

The first of the three fully-assessed first year courses is compulsory and has two parts: in the first term students are introduced to Statistics and Computing; in terms 2 and 3 they are given an overview of the subject area through the course ‘Introduction to Business and Management’.
Normally the two remaining first-year courses are selected from Management School subjects (Management Science, Accounting and Finance, Management and Organisation, Economics, and Marketing). However, broader opportunities are also offered by allowing students to take – as their second subject – a European language (French, German, Italian or Spanish), or Business Law. Intensive language courses are available to students with little or no prior knowledge of the chosen language.
Second and third years
In their second and third years, students are required to specialise in two subject areas in LUMS, i.e., Accounting & Finance, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Management Science (Operational Research), Management & Organisation and Marketing. If a European language was chosen in the first year, it can be continued as one of the specialisms. To ensure full-coverage of each management area, by the end of the degree at least one course must have been taken in each of Accounting and Finance, Economics, Management Science and Marketing. Students are also given the opportunity to take innovative courses in Entrepreneurship and in Management & Organisation.
Second year for Study Abroad degree
Students who opt for the BSc (Hons) Study Abroad programme, will spend the whole of the second year at one of our highly rated international partner institutions. Students’ places at the partner universities are conditional upon their achieving an above-average performance in year 1 (at least two grades of 60% or more and one of 50% or more). The LUMS International Office gives advice and support both before and during the year abroad.
The courses you take overseas count towards the BSc (Hons) degree. They will be similar in content to those taken if you had stayed at Lancaster, though your experiences will be very different! One student recently summed it up by writing: "the contrasts between Morecambe Bay and San Francisco Bay could not have been greater!"
