Most MIT students choose to spend their third year away from Lancaster, working for an organisation. This is advantageous as it not only allows the students an opportunity to find out more about future companies and the roles that they may consider applying to, but also provides them with invaluable experience and skills that help them in their studies when they return to Lancaster for their final year and also in applying for jobs. Also, some students are recruited by the organisations they have spent their year working for. Further, the money that students earn in their year out is also valuable!

Student comments on the placement experience

Mark Woodworth, IBM

"My placement with IBM has given me an invaluable experience into the world of work and how organisations are not only managed, but how they function on a global scale. I was given a ‘real life’ role, and had responsibility from the start. This was a shock at first, but worked out very well in the end as it gave me opportunity to interact with many different people, and make changes to processes which were followed both inside and outside the Operations team I was a part of. My placement year has given me the opportunity to look at what areas of business I would want to work within in the future, and also those which would definitely not suit me! I would recommend a placement to anyone and think that it gives you a solid mind-set to return to Lancaster for your final year."

Eliot Wassell, Peugeot-Citroen

"My twelve-month industrial placement with PSA Peugeot Citroen has been one of the highlights of my degree so far. The opportunity to work for a multinational company was a fantastic experience. The variety of projects and levels of responsibility I was given really allowed me to develop as an individual. The support provided by the University allowed me to stand out during the application process and provided useful advice regarding my CV and assessment centre."

Patrick Minard, GlaxoSmithKline

"Applying to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for my third-year placement year as part of the BSc Management and Information Technology four-year sandwich course was one of the best decisions of my academic career. GSK is the biggest pharmaceutical company in Europe and second biggest in the world with over 100,000 employees and 300 sites worldwide. For my placement year I worked within Network Services section of IT."

Laura Hyatt, Fujitsu

"I'm in charge of managing the escalations of the estate. Every time there is a serious incident it becomes an escalation. It's my job to assign these to the relevant engineers, makes sure they are fixing the incident, liaise with the customer – and do all this before the SLA deadline. This is very important since the Home Office IT systems powers prisons, airport security and immigration, and incidents need to be fixed fast!"
