Collaboration between Lancaster University Management School and the Gulf region was boosted recently, with the signing of a partnership between Gulf One Lancaster Centre for Economic Research (GOLCER) and the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research (BCSR).

Professor Sue Cox, Dean of Lancaster University Management School, opened the signing event on 21 May and expressed the importance of such collaborations for universities.

“An association with the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research provides many opportunities for both parties to collaborate on interesting and economically significant projects in the Gulf region. This is particularly important for all universities at this time, given recent remarks by John Denham, Secretary of State for the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, encouraging international research partnerships in our sector.” In offering strong support for this link between the UK and the Gulf region, Professor Cox wished the venture and all those involved in it great success.

Dr Abdulla Alsadiq, Secretary General of the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research, delivered a short presentation showing the wide-ranging activities and research interests of the Centre, and evidence of further international co-operation. He remembered Lancaster University as having “exceptionally high standards and a drive for excellence and global collaboration, and these characteristics remain”. He said that “Bahrain is the gateway to trade in the Gulf region and a major financial hub.” BCSR has expertise in this area, while energy and security are key interrelated subjects.

Dr Marwan Izzeldin, Director of GOLCER, said: “The main objective of this partnership is to deliver high-quality research, which focuses on economic and financial developments in the Gulf region, and their impact on the international markets.”

Joining representatives from Lancaster University and BCSR, were Dr Mohamed Salisu, Chief Economist of Gulf One Investment Bank, and Ana Timberlake, the founder and director of Timberlake Consultants, who are associates of this initiative.
