IBMGlobal technology giant IBM has formed a sponsorship agreement with LUMSA – an umbrella organisation which brings together all Management School student societies. IBM will provide guidance, consulting and other developmental resources to LUMSA.

LUMSA hopes that this initiative with IBM will be the first of many similar long-term partnerships. The agreement with IBM is an example of LUMS’ continual efforts to increase the employability of students through all facets of the university experience.

IBM see many potential benefits from working with LUMSA, including the ability to work closely with ambitious graduates from Lancaster University Management School. Plans include enhancing IBM's graduate recruitment strategy by tailoring workshops to Lancaster University students and developing IBM on-campus brand awareness.

The first outcome of the new partnership was a workshop that IBM ran for the executive members of all Management School student societies on 9 June 2010. The aim of the workshop was to promote leadership, negotiation and team-working skills. One of the exercises, the Hot Air Balloon Survival Game, tested participants’ negotiation skills in a tense environment. Participants were assigned a character, and had to use their negotiation skills to avoid being thrown out of the balloon.

The general feeling at the end of the day was that the activities and opportunity to network really strengthened the relationship between IBM, LUMSA and participant societies.
