Lancaster University Management School’s Inaugural Faculty Research Conference was held in the School on Wednesday 30th June. The conference was opened by Professor Peter Pope, Associate Dean for Research, and was followed by a thought-provoking keynote, The craft of research - yes we can!, delivered by Professor Paul Jackson of Manchester Business School.

With over 100 delegates, the conference was a great success. The focus of the event was to explore the research interests of new and early-career faculty, and to provide a platform to encourage new research collaborations and cross-departmental activities within the LUMS.

The diverse programme was split into themed qualitative and quantitative parallel sessions and ran throughout the day.

A PhD poster exhibition provided a focus for discussion during lunch and presentation breaks. This exhibition performed a dual role, both as a forum for PhD students to display their research projects, and as a way for PhD students to obtain feedback and suggestions for future work from peers and faculty.

£50 prizes for the best posters were awarded to Alison Stowell (Department of Organisation, Work and Technology) for her poster Organising Computer Waste Recovery:  Can we WEEE in the same way? and Matt McDonald (Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development) for his poster From Beneficiary to Business: A Change of Focus? with a runner up prize of £25 for Jiani Qjan (Department of Management Science) for her poster on Fuel Emission Optimization in Vehicle Routing Problems with Time‐Varying Speeds.

The day finished with a barbeque for staff and students in the evening sunshine. Over all, the conference surpassed expectations and was judged highly successful.

Professor Mary Rose (Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development):  ‘It was a lovely opportunity to learn more about new research going on across LUMS and to discuss with colleagues – a great academic and social event – I hope it becomes an annual feature’

Dr Martin Friesl (Centre for Strategic Management): ‘I think the day was absolutely brilliant and I hope that this will be a regular event.’

Professor Stein Wallace (Department of Management Science): ‘It was great to see what new colleagues are doing, and how people in different departments overlap in very interesting ways.’

Dr Joanne Larty (Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development): ‘It was an excellent day and so good to find out about others’ research across the School, hopefully we’ll be having more of these days in the future!’

The Research Support and Doctoral Office would like to thank everyone for their support during the planning stages, and most importantly, the faculty and students who attended the event and thereby contributed to its success.
